Wayne Rooney is in talks with the BBC over a pundit role on Match of the Day, according to reports.

The former Manchester United and England captain is out of management once again after he was dismissed by Championship side Plymouth Argyle in December.

Rooney took his fourth job in management at Plymouth back in May following previous spells with Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City.

However, Rooney was sacked after just seven months following a run of just one win in 14 games.

According to The Sun, Rooney is now in negotiations with the BBC over a rotating guest pundit role on Match of the Day.

The report claims that the job could earn Rooney up to £200,000 a year, depending on how many appearances he makes.

‘Punditry is one of a number of options open to Wayne for the future,’ a source told the newspaper.

‘He worked alongside Gary and co at the Euros last summer, and was a huge hit with viewers.

‘He’s also eminently likeable with a forensic knowledge and love of the game.

The role of lead Match of the Day presenter will be shared by Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan (BBC)

‘Match of the Day and a couple of other broadcasters are interested in having him on their programming.

‘Wayne and the BBC are in early stage negotiations but it is looking promising and he is taking some time to work out exactly what he wants to do next.’

Earlier this week, the BBC announced that Match of the Day will be presented by Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan from next season following Gary Lineker’s exit.

Lineker is stepping down this summer after 26 years in the role, but will continue to present FA Cup games and be involved in the BBC’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup.
