Perry Groves says he would take Victor Osimhen ‘in a heartbeat’ at Arsenal if the opportunity arose before the January transfer deadline.

Arsenal opted against signing a proven goalscorer last summer, with Mikel Arteta putting his trust in Kai Havertz after the German’s success as a false No.9 in the back-end of last season.

But calls for the Gunners to bring in an out-and-out centre-forward have intensified once again this month, with Mikel Arteta’s men sitting six points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool – who have a game in hand over their rivals.

Gabriel Jesus’ recent season-ending injury has only fuelled this speculation, with a host of top strikers linked with move to the Emirates after the Brazilian’s devastating setback, from Newcastle’s Alexander Isak to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Speaking after Arsenal’s north London derby win over Tottenham, Arteta revealed for the first time that the club would actively look to strengthen up front before the end of January window.

Asked whether Arsenal were on the hunt for a player to replace Jesus in attack, the Arsenal head coach told TNT Sports: ‘Yes, for sure.

‘Because we lost two players, big players, Bukayo [Saka], who can be out for up to three months, that’s a long time, and Gabi, who is going to be out for a long, long, long time.’

Asked if Arsenal will push to make a signing before the January deadline, the Spaniard replied: ‘We are going to try, for sure.

‘We are actively looking at. I think we have lost two very, very important players, we have 14 players in the squad, and we play every three days.

‘We will try but let’s see who we can get.’
