Madison Keys won her first tennis grand slam at the 2025 Australian Open with a thrilling underdog victory over world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka.

The American – competing in only her second grand slam final and first since 2017 – defeated the No.1 seed who was aiming to win a third straight title in Melbourne on Saturday.

Keys, who beat Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, came flying out of the trap, racing into a 5-1 lead before claiming the first set 6-3, leaving Sabalenka shell-shocked.

And after Keys, 29, won the opening game of the next set, the crowd at the Rod Lavner Arena began to believe that a major upset was on the cards.

But Sabalenka, 26, showed just why she is the world No.1, winning the next five games in imperious fashion before claiming the second set 6-2 and forcing the match into a decider.

The deciding set proved to be an edgy and gruelling affair, as momentum swung back and forth with neither player able to force a break.

As the two hour mark neared, Keys twice had the chance to break for the championship and while she didn’t take the first opportunity, she made no mistake the second time round, winning 7-5.

Emotions bubbled over immediately after the winning point, as Sabalenka furiously smashed her racket to pieces and buried her head in her towel before quickly leaving the court.

Keys, who was seeded 19th meanwhile could not hide her excitement and delight, finally tasting victory at her 46th grand slam appearance – the third longest wait for a championship title in the Open Era.

The Belarusian did return to the court for the trophy presentation where she was gracious in defeat and congratulated Keys on an well-earned victory.

Holding the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup, the American said: ‘Bear with me because I’m absolutely going to cry. There is no way I get through this without tears, so sorry in advance!

‘Firstly, Aryna you are an unbelievable player and I’m glad I got you back!

‘You are always so tough to play against and we always have the craziest matches. Congratulations to you and your team for another amazing Grand Slam run.

‘Thank you to everyone who came out and cheered the last two weeks. I always feel so at home here.

‘I made my very first Grand Slam semi-final here in Melbourne, so to have won my first Grand Slam in the same place means the absolute world to me.’

The Australian Open concludes on Sunday with the men’s singles final between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.
