Manchester United are out of the FA Cup after losing to Fulham on penalties at Old Trafford.

The sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of football with Bruno Fernandes’ second-half strike wiping out Calvin Bassey’s opener.

Bernd Leno was the hero for Fulham, saving two spot kicks from Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee to send the Cottagers into the last eight of the competition.

Fulham’s reward is a home tie against Crystal Palace where a place in the semi-finals will be up for grabs.

Defending champions United were undone on a corner kick for the 13th time this season on the stroke of half-time, with Bassey getting ahead of Fernandes to nod home from close range.

Alejandro Garnacho, introduced as a second-half sub, was involved in United’s equaliser after 71 minutes with Fernandes brilliantly sweeping into the far corner.

Rasmus Hojlund endured another horrible night at the office with his goalless run extending into 18 games.

17-year-old Chido Obi replaced him and almost secured his fairytale moment on his home debut, only to be denied by a wonderful extra-time save from Leno.

Penalties loomed and after six flawless spot kicks, Lindelof blinked first with Leno guessing right to deny the Swede.

With Antonee Robinson coolly slotting home, it was down to Zirkzee to keep his side in the competition with the Fulham shot stopper guessing correct again to send his side through.

United’s only hope of silverware this season is the Europa League with games home and away to Real Sociedad awaiting.
