In a London derby seriously lacking in moments of real quality, Merino’s goal from an inswinging Martin Odegaard corner in the 20th minute proved the difference at the Emirates.
The Spaniard was given a large helping hand from fellow countryman Robert Sanchez, who endured another less-than-convincing afternoon between the sticks for the visitors.
Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between and Chelsea offered little in reply despite enjoying 59 pent of possession, with Enzo Maresca’s men reduced to pot-shots and half chances across what proved a scrappy 90 minutes.
The result saw Mikel Arteta’s Gunners move to within 12 points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who face Newcastle in today’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to extend their one-point advantage over fifth-placed Manchester City and will hope to put things right at home to Tottenham on Thursday night.
The Blues’ latest setback against Arsenal means they are without a win in their last six contests against the north London outfit, a wretched run stretching back to August 2021.
