Matheus Cunha sends transfer message to Arsenal as Wolves beat Aston Villa

Matheus Cunha indicated that he will not be joining Arsenal in the final days of the January transfer window with his celebration during Wolves’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday night.

The Brazilian forward has been Wolves’ star performer this season with 11 goals in the Premier League so far.

However, Wolves have needed to fend off interest in the 25-year-old this month with Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest all linked with a move.

But after scoring Wolves’ second goal in injury time to seal their 2-0 win against Villa at Molineux, Cunha appeared to give a clear message to supporters during his celebration as he pointed to the turf and made a heart shape with his hands.

Cunha reinforced his message after the full-time whistle as he was seen smiling at fans while he pointed to the Wolves badge on his shirt.

He was also briefly seen making a gesture which mimicked the signing of a contract.

Speaking last week, Paul Merson urged Arsenal to make a move for Cunha before Monday’s transfer deadline.

‘I’d go and buy Cunha, I’d go and get Cunha, because I see that as an all-round package where he can play there for the next five years,’ Merson said.

‘I think they’ve got to wait for the centre-forward, don’t rush into that.

‘If Liverpool’s game in hand was now and they won it, Arsenal would be near-on ten points behind… do you have a panic and buy a centre-forward for £70-80m, give them massive wages?

‘You’re not going to win the league this year so you might as well keep your powder dry, hold back and go and get the right person in the summer.’
