Man Utd and Arsenal ‘make contact’ over move for Serie A top scorer

Atalanta’s in-form striker Mateo Retegui has attracted plenty of attention from the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester United already making contact over a possible move, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has scored 20 Serie A goals already this season, coming in just 22 appearances and only 18 starts.

The Italy international signed for Atalanta from Genoa over the summer after scoring seven league goals last season, so he has been an greater hit than they could have been expecting.

Born and raised in Argentina, he made his name during a loan spell with Tigre from Boca Juniors, scoring 30 goals in 48 outings which earned himself a move to Italy.

He is now being linked with another big move, with his incredible form catching the eye of Premier League giants.

French publication Foot Mercato report that both Arsenal and Manchester United have ‘contacted the Bergamo management’ over Retegui’s availability.

The report also states that Aston Villa have an interest in the striker, as do Paris Saint-Germain.

The on-fire forward is under contract with Atalanta until 2028 so the Italian club is under no pressure to sell and would be asking for a substantial price given his recent form.

Atalanta paid Genoa €28m (£23.3m) for Retegui last summer and they would be charging interested parties a lot more than that if they come calling at the end of this season.

His transfer value only grew last weekend as Atalanta beat Verona 5-0 away from home and their star striker scored four goals.

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini was obviously delighted with the performance, but did offer Retegui a reminder that he also needs to perform when things are not going the team’s way.

‘He’s extraordinary when the team dominates, like today,’ Gasperini said.

‘An extraordinary scorer – 20 goals so far is an incredible number. There are also games that he doesn’t dominate, when you are forced to defend and there is room for improvement.’

Atalanta take on Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout play-off in Belgium on Wednesday night, with Retegui already scoring three goals in the group stage.
