Manchester United flop Antony started his loan spell at Real Betis impressively, winning the MVP award for his performance in the 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao.

The Brazil international has moved to the La Liga side for the rest of the season after an underwhelming two-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2022 from Ajax for an initial £82m and, despite a reasonably bright start, never came close to justifying that price tag.

The winger made 96 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions, scoring 12 goals, but was out of contention under Ruben Amorim and took the chance to move on loan to Real Betis in January.

Things have begun well for him in Spain as he started the La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao and quickly registered an assist as his saved shot was prodded home by Isco.

There was some disappointment for the home side as they twice took the lead and were twice pegged back, with the game finishing 2-2.

However, it was a successful start for Antony who was named Player of the Match by being handed the La Liga MVP award.

Posting on Instagram, Antony wrote: ‘Let’s go for more! Happy to be elected MVP!!!’

Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini spoke very positively about his new signing after the match, although offered him some advice on not over-playing.

‘Well, I think it was a very positive debut,’ said the former Manchester City manager. ‘He’s a quality player.

‘I was talking to him just before the game. I think a good player doesn’t have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball. He has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross.

‘I think he was very involved today, especially with the second goal. He had just arrived a couple of days before and I think he’s going to contribute a lot to us.’
